Associate Degree in Business Administration (Online Guide)
An associate degree in business administration is a two-year, roughly 60-credit program that teaches accounting, management, marketing and business law. It can lead straight to entry-level work or serve as the first half of a bachelor's degree, depending on which track you choose.
01What an associate degree in business administration actually is
An associate degree in business administration is an undergraduate credential that typically requires about 60 semester credits (about 90 at quarter-system schools). Full-time students usually finish in two years; part-time students often take three or four. Roughly half the credits go to business courses and half to general education such as English composition, college math and a science.
Community colleges award most business associate degrees, but many four-year universities and online colleges offer them too. The degree is the first rung on the business degree ladder, and it does two different jobs: it can prepare you for supervisory and administrative roles right away, or it can cover the first two years of a bachelor's at a lower price. Which job it does for you depends mostly on the degree title.
02AAS vs AA vs AS: pick the business associate degree track that fits your plan
The three letters after "associate" matter more than most students realize. They signal how many of your credits are general education and therefore how easily they will transfer.
| Degree | Main purpose | General education | Transfer outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Associate of Arts (AA) in Business | Transfer to a bachelor's | Heavy, humanities leaning | Strong, especially within state transfer agreements |
| Associate of Science (AS) in Business | Transfer to a bachelor's | Heavy, more math and science | Strong; good fit if you may study finance or analytics |
| Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Business | Go straight to work | Light | Partial; many technical courses may count only as electives |
If there is any chance you will want a bachelor's later, choose an AA or AS. If you are certain you want job-ready skills now (office management, bookkeeping, small business operations), the AAS packs in more applied coursework. For a deeper comparison of the two transfer tracks, see associate of arts vs associate of science.
03Courses in a business administration associate degree
Course titles vary, but most programs share a recognizable core. A typical 60-credit plan looks something like this:
| Block | Approximate credits | Example courses |
|---|---|---|
| Business core | 21 to 27 | Principles of Accounting I and II, Introduction to Business, Principles of Management, Principles of Marketing, Business Law |
| Economics and quantitative | 6 to 9 | Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Business Statistics |
| General education | 18 to 30 | English Composition I and II, College Algebra, Public Speaking, a lab science, a social science |
| Electives | 3 to 9 | Human Resource Management, Small Business Management, Computer Applications |
AAS programs shift credits from general education into applied courses such as payroll accounting, QuickBooks, customer service management or supervision. Some schools also offer an associate in business management with a stronger leadership focus; the content overlaps heavily with business administration, so compare the course list rather than the name.
If accounting is your real interest, look for programs that include two semesters of financial and managerial accounting, since those transfer cleanly into an accounting degree.
04How an online associate degree in business works
Online business associate programs usually run in one of three formats:
- Standard semester terms. About 15-week courses with weekly deadlines, the same calendar as campus classes. Easiest to combine with financial aid.
- Accelerated terms. Courses compressed into 7 or 8 weeks. You take fewer classes at once but each one moves twice as fast.
- Self-paced or competency-based. You move through material as fast as you can prove mastery. Good for experienced office workers; risky if you need outside structure.
Most coursework is asynchronous: recorded lectures, discussion boards, quizzes and short projects. Expect some proctored exams, usually through a webcam service. Under the federal credit-hour definition, each semester credit assumes roughly one hour of instruction plus two hours of homework per week, so a 3-credit online course still means around 9 hours a week. Timelines are covered in more detail in how long it takes to get an associate degree.
05Transferring your associate's degree in business into a bachelor's
Most bachelor's degrees require about 120 semester credits. In the best case, a 60-credit AA or AS transfers whole and you start as a junior with 60 credits left. The math changes quickly when credits do not transfer:
- All 60 credits accepted: 120 minus 60 leaves 60 credits, about two full-time years.
- Only 45 accepted: 120 minus 45 leaves 75 credits, roughly an extra semester.
- An AAS with 36 accepted: 120 minus 36 leaves 84 credits, close to three years.
To protect your credits, ask the four-year school three questions before you enroll in the associate program: Is there an articulation or guaranteed-admission agreement with this college? Will the degree satisfy all lower-division general education? Which business courses come in as direct equivalents rather than electives? Get the answers in writing. 06Business administration jobs with an associate's degree
An associate degree qualifies you for many roles where employers want business literacy but not a four-year degree. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the following typical entry-level education and 2025 median pay:
| Occupation | Typical entry education (BLS) | Median pay, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks | Some college, no degree | $50,670 |
| Insurance sales agents | High school diploma | $62,280 |
| Food service managers | High school diploma | $69,390 |
| Lodging managers | High school diploma | $69,250 |
| Property, real estate and community association managers | High school diploma | $69,990 |
In these fields a degree does not guarantee a job, but it often helps you compete for supervisory and assistant manager positions. Be realistic about limits: BLS projects bookkeeping clerk jobs to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035 as software automates routine entries, so an associate is better used as a step toward analytical or management work than as an endpoint in that field.
Earnings data also show the step-up value of each level. In 2025, BLS reports median weekly earnings of $1,135 for full-time workers whose highest credential is an associate degree, compared with $966 for high school graduates and $1,578 for bachelor's holders. 07Cost of an associate degree in business and how to pay for it
Community colleges are the cheapest route. The College Board reports average published tuition and fees of $4,150 for public two-year colleges (in-district) in 2025-26, compared with $11,950 at public four-year schools (in-state) and $45,000 at private nonprofit four-year schools. Online programs at private and for-profit colleges can cost far more than local community college options, so price your local school first.
A simple estimate: annual tuition times years enrolled, plus books, fees and any technology charges. At the College Board average, two full-time years at a community college come to roughly twice that annual figure in published tuition before aid, still well below a single year of published private nonprofit tuition.
Federal aid applies to accredited online programs that take part in Title IV. The maximum Pell Grant is $7,395 for 2026-27, which can exceed community college tuition for students with the highest need. Independent undergraduates can borrow up to $9,500 in Direct Loans in the first year. Section 127 also lets employers pay up to $5,250 a year in tuition tax-free, so ask HR before you enroll. Full details are in our financial aid for online college guide.
08Choosing a program: a short checklist
- Confirm institutional accreditation in the Department of Education's DAPIP database or CHEA's directory. Unaccredited credits rarely transfer and do not qualify for federal aid.
- Look for business program accreditation from ACBSP, which accredits programs down to the associate level. It is a plus, not a requirement.
- Check transfer agreements with the bachelor's programs you might attend later.
- Compare format: term-based, accelerated or self-paced, and whether any live sessions are required.
- Ask about credit for prior learning, such as CLEP exams or workplace training, which can shorten the degree.
09Frequently asked questions
Is an associate degree in business administration worth it?
It is worth it when it is cheap and leads somewhere. Completed at a community college, it costs far less than the first two years at a four-year school and can transfer whole into a bachelor's. BLS data for 2025 show higher median weekly earnings for associate holders than for high school graduates. It is weaker as a final credential for roles that typically require a bachelor's.
How long does a business associate degree take?
Most students need about 60 semester credits, which takes two years at a full-time load of 15 credits per term. Part-time students commonly take three to four years. Accelerated 8-week terms, summer sessions and transfer credit from CLEP or prior college work can shorten the timeline. Self-paced competency-based programs let experienced students move faster if they can demonstrate mastery.
What jobs can you get with an associate's degree in business?
Common options include bookkeeping clerk, office or administrative supervisor, assistant store or restaurant manager, insurance sales agent, property management assistant and customer service lead. BLS lists several of these as requiring a high school diploma or some college, so the degree mainly helps you stand out and move into supervisory roles faster. Higher-paying analyst roles usually require a bachelor's.
Can I get an associate degree in business fully online?
Yes. Many community colleges and universities offer fully online business associate degrees with asynchronous courses. Check that the school is institutionally accredited, that it is authorized to enroll students in your state and that it participates in federal student aid. Some programs require proctored exams, which are usually taken online through a webcam proctoring service.
Should I choose an AA, AS or AAS in business?
Choose an AA or AS if you plan to earn a bachelor's later, because both are built around transferable general education. An AS adds more math and science, which helps for finance or analytics. Choose an AAS only if you want job-ready applied skills now and accept that some technical courses may transfer only as electives or not at all.
