Master’s in Management (MSM) vs MBA

A master's in management (MSM or MiM) is a shorter, more foundational business master's aimed at recent graduates and early-career professionals. An MBA expects more work experience and goes deeper into strategy. Your experience level is usually the deciding factor.

01What is an MSM degree?

A master's in management is a graduate business degree that teaches the fundamentals of managing people, money and operations. In the US it is usually called a Master of Science in Management (MSM); in Europe and at some US schools it is the Master in Management (MiM). Either way, the MSM degree is designed for people who have little business training and limited work experience, often students who studied liberal arts, sciences or engineering and want business skills before or early in their careers.

Some US programs called "MS in Management" are aimed at working adults instead, particularly online programs with a leadership focus. Because the name covers both models, read each program's admissions requirements to see which audience it targets.

A simple rule: if you have fewer than a few years of full-time work, an MSM is often a better fit; if you have more and want to move into leadership, compare online MBA programs.

03What you study in a master's degree in management

MSM curricula vary, but most combine a business core with professional skills. A representative course list:

  • Financial Accounting
  • Managerial Economics
  • Corporate Finance or Financial Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Organizational Behavior and Leadership
  • Operations and Supply Chain Management
  • Business Analytics or Data-Driven Decision Making
  • Business Communication
  • Strategic Management
  • Capstone project or consulting practicum

Programs aimed at working adults often swap some quantitative courses for leadership, change management and human resources topics. Those programs show up in searches like "online master's degree in management and leadership," and they overlap with an organizational leadership degree. Compare the course list carefully: a quant-heavy MSM and a leadership MSM prepare you for different jobs.

04Length and format of an online master's degree in management

Master's degrees typically require about 30 to 60 semester credits, and most MSM programs sit near the low end of that range. Full-time, campus-based MiM programs often finish in about a year. Online programs usually run part-time in 8-week terms, so the length depends on your pace:

  • Two 3-credit courses per 8-week term, five terms a year: 30 credits a year, about a year for a 30-credit program.
  • One course per term: 15 credits a year, roughly 2 to 2.5 years.

Online formats include asynchronous courses with weekly deadlines, live virtual sessions for case discussions, and occasionally competency-based options. Under the federal credit-hour definition, a 3-credit course assumes about 9 hours of total work per week over a standard 15-week semester, and more per week in an 8-week term. For broader timelines, see how long a master's degree takes.

05Admissions requirements

Typical requirements for a masters degree in management include a bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited school, transcripts, a resume, an essay and recommendations. Pre-experience programs often weigh academic record and potential; working-adult programs weigh professional history.

Many programs are test-optional or accept either the GMAT Focus Edition (scored 205 to 805) or the GRE. Some require a basic statistics or college algebra course before you start. If your undergraduate degree was already in business, an MSM may repeat much of what you learned; a specialized master's in finance, analytics or accounting, or eventually an MBA, may add more value.

Before applying, ask each program three practical questions: Does it accept students without prior business coursework, and is there a free or low-cost prep module? Can relevant graduate credits from another program transfer in? And what share of recent students had work experience? The last answer tells you who your classmates will be, which shapes how much you learn from group work and class discussion.

06Cost and paying for an MSM

Because MSM programs are usually shorter than MBAs, total tuition is often lower, though prices vary widely by school and public programs generally cost less than private ones. Estimate total cost by multiplying credits by the per-credit rate and adding fees.

Graduate students file the FAFSA for federal loans. For new borrowers from July 1, 2026, the annual graduate Direct Loan limit is $20,500 with a $100,000 aggregate limit, and Grad PLUS ends for new borrowers. Confirm transition rules with your school's aid office. If you already work, employers can provide up to $5,250 a year tax-free for education under Section 127. 07Careers after a master's in management

MSM graduates typically enter roles where broad business skills matter: analyst, coordinator, associate consultant, operations or project roles, and management training programs. BLS lists a bachelor's as the typical entry education for most of these, so the MSM helps you compete, particularly if your undergraduate degree was outside business.

OccupationMedian pay, 2025Outlook 2025-35
Management analysts$101,86010%
Project management specialists$102,3207%
Logisticians$82,32018%
Human resources specialists$75,9406%
Administrative services managers$110,5005%

Medians reflect workers at all experience levels, so early-career pay is generally lower. BLS also reports 2025 median weekly earnings of $1,876 for master's degree holders versus $1,578 for bachelor's holders. Some MSM graduates return later for an MBA or an executive MBA once they have management experience; schools do not always give credit for the MSM, so expect some overlap.

08Who should choose an MSM, and who should choose an MBA

Choose a master's in management if you finished a non-business bachelor's recently, want business fundamentals quickly, have limited work experience, or want a lower-cost credential to enter a business role.

Choose an MBA if you have several years of experience, want to move into leadership or switch careers at a higher level, or your employer values the MBA name specifically.

Consider a specialized master's instead (finance, business analytics, accounting) if you already know the function you want. Browse options on our business degree levels hub.

09Frequently asked questions

What is an MSM degree?

MSM stands for Master of Science in Management. It is a graduate business degree, usually near the low end of the typical 30 to 60 master's credit range, that teaches fundamentals such as accounting, finance, marketing, operations, organizational behavior and strategy. Many MSM programs target recent graduates with limited work experience, while some online MSM programs are designed for working adults who want leadership skills.

Is a master's in management worth it?

It is most worthwhile for people with a non-business bachelor's who want business skills early in their careers, because it is usually shorter and cheaper than an MBA. It is less valuable if you already hold a business bachelor's, since content overlaps. BLS 2025 data show higher median weekly earnings for master's holders than bachelor's holders across all fields.

Is an MSM the same as an MBA?

No. Both are management master's degrees, but an MBA generally expects several years of work experience and uses that experience in case-based classes focused on strategy and leadership. An MSM is typically more foundational and aimed at earlier-career students. MSM programs are often shorter, and the two lead to different career stages.

Can I get a master's degree in management online?

Yes. Many accredited universities offer online master's degrees in management, often in 8-week asynchronous terms that let you keep working. Confirm institutional accreditation in the Department of Education's DAPIP database, check whether the business school holds AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE accreditation, and make sure the program is authorized in your state.

Can I get an MBA after an MSM?

Yes, and some people do once they gain management experience. Expect overlap in core courses. A few schools may waive some MBA foundation courses for MSM graduates, but many will not, so ask before you apply. If you are likely to want an MBA within a few years, consider whether starting with the MBA later makes more sense.
