Online Accounting Degree Programs: How They Work

Online accounting degree programs teach the same coursework as campus programs through recorded lessons, weekly problem sets and proctored exams. From an accredited school, an online degree counts the same for jobs and CPA eligibility; the real differences are format, pacing, support and price.

01What an online accounting degree is like week to week

An online accounting degree replaces the lecture hall with a learning platform, but the work looks much like any accounting course: read the chapter, watch the instructor's worked examples, then complete problem sets in which you journalize transactions, build statements or calculate tax. Accounting is well suited to online study because so much of it is practice with immediate right-or-wrong feedback.

A typical week in a 3-credit course might include:

  • Two to four short recorded lectures walking through example problems.
  • A homework set in an online accounting practice system that grades entries automatically and lets you retry similar problems.
  • A discussion post or short written case, often about an ethics or disclosure question.
  • A quiz, with larger proctored exams at midterm and final.

Students who succeed online tend to set fixed study blocks, work problems by hand before checking answers, and use instructor office hours early. Students who struggle tend to watch lectures passively and then discover on the exam that they cannot do the entries themselves.

02Course formats: asynchronous, live, accelerated and competency-based

FormatHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Asynchronous, standard termWeekly deadlines, no set login times, 15 to 16 weeksWorking adults who need flexibilityEasy to fall behind without structure
Synchronous or blendedScheduled live class sessions onlineStudents who want real-time explanationSessions may clash with work schedules
AcceleratedSame content in 5 to 8 weeksStudents with time to study intensivelyIntermediate Accounting in 8 weeks is a heavy load
Competency-basedAdvance when you pass each assessmentPeople with bookkeeping or accounting experienceLittle external pacing; self-discipline essential

A practical tip: if a program uses short terms, ask whether you can take Intermediate Accounting I and II in a standard-length term. These are the courses where students most often need time for material to settle, and many advisors recommend not pairing them with another demanding course.

03Proctored exams, software and technical requirements

Because accounting exams carry so much weight, most online programs proctor them. Expect one of three methods: live remote proctoring through your webcam, recorded and AI-flagged remote proctoring reviewed afterward, or an in-person testing center. Remote proctoring usually requires a quiet private room, a clear desk, a webcam and a reliable internet connection. Ask in advance what calculators and scratch paper are permitted.

You will also use software you will see on the job:

  • Spreadsheets for nearly everything, including lookups, pivot tables and basic modeling.
  • Small business accounting software in introductory and associate-level courses.
  • ERP or data analytics tools in accounting information systems and audit analytics courses.
  • Tax preparation software in some tax courses.

Most schools provide student licenses. A laptop or desktop is strongly preferable to a tablet, since spreadsheet-heavy work and proctoring software often do not run well on mobile devices.

04Online accounting associate, bachelor's and master's degrees

Online accounting associate degree

An accounting associate degree online covers about 60 credits: principles of accounting, payroll, introductory tax, accounting software and general education. It is a sensible low-cost start if the credits transfer into a bachelor's. Confirm a transfer agreement before enrolling, since applied (AAS) degrees transfer less smoothly than AA or AS degrees. Our guide to associate of arts vs associate of science explains why.

Online accounting bachelor degree

An accounting bachelor degree online requires about 120 credits and includes the full sequence: intermediate, cost, tax, audit, accounting information systems and advanced accounting. This is the degree most employers and state boards expect. If you have prior college credit, transfer can shorten it substantially; for example, 60 transferred credits leaves 60 to complete.

Online accounting master's degree

Online master's degrees in accounting (MAcc or MSA) usually require about 30 credits. Many are designed for two audiences: accounting graduates who need extra hours for the CPA, and career changers with a non-accounting bachelor's, who may need to complete prerequisite courses first. Some programs fold those prerequisites into a longer bridge track.

MBA in accounting online

An MBA in accounting online pairs a general MBA core with several accounting electives. It suits people heading toward finance leadership more than those aiming at audit or tax technical work, and it may include fewer accounting credits than a state board requires. See online MBA programs for more on MBA formats.

05Accreditation and CPA eligibility for online degrees

State boards of accountancy do not ask whether you studied online. They ask whether your school was accredited by a recognized accreditor and whether your transcript shows the required accounting and business credits. That makes two checks essential:

  1. Institutional accreditation. Verify the school in the Department of Education's DAPIP database or CHEA's directory. The Department no longer distinguishes regional and national accreditors, but some boards and employers still pay attention to the accreditor, so confirm that your state board accepts it.
  2. Business and accounting accreditation. AACSB accredits 1,098 schools as of September 2026 and offers a separate accounting accreditation at some of them. ACBSP and IACBE also accredit accounting programs. These are quality signals rather than legal requirements in most states, but some employers prefer them.

Then compare your planned courses against your state board's education requirements. The traditional CPA rule is 150 semester hours; since May 2025, a large and growing number of states also allow a bachelor's (120 hours) plus two years of experience. Details are on our CPA degree requirements page, and current state rules are at nasba.org.

06Cost and financial aid for online accounting programs

Online accounting programs price tuition in several ways: per credit, flat per term, or the same in-state rate for all online students. A few programs charge out-of-state online students more. Add technology fees, proctoring fees and course materials, which can include access codes for homework systems.

For a baseline, the College Board's 2025-26 average published tuition and fees are $4,150 at public two-year colleges (in-district), $11,950 at public four-year schools (in-state) and $45,000 at private nonprofit four-year schools. Your own cost is easiest to estimate with a simple formula: credits you still need times cost per credit, plus fees per term times number of terms.

Online students can receive federal aid if the school is accredited by a recognized accreditor, participates in Title IV programs and is authorized in your state. Pell Grants reach up to $7,395 for 2026-27 for eligible undergraduates. Direct Loans require at least half-time enrollment. Graduate students in master's programs should note that from July 1, 2026, Grad PLUS loans end for new borrowers and the graduate annual limit is $20,500; confirm details with the school's aid office. Our financial aid for online college guide covers the rest.

07How long online accounting degrees take

ProgramTypical creditsFull-timePart-time (about 6 credits per term)
AssociateAbout 602 years3 to 4 years
Bachelor's from zeroAbout 1204 years6 or more years
Bachelor's with associate transferredAbout 60 remaining2 years3 to 4 years
Master's in accountingAbout 301 yearAbout 2 years

Year-round enrollment shortens these. The accounting sequence itself imposes some limits, though: Intermediate I must come before Intermediate II, and audit usually follows both, so even fast students need several terms to complete the upper-level chain.

08Questions to ask an online accounting program

  • Which accreditor recognizes the school, and has your state board accepted graduates from it?
  • How many accounting and business credits does the bachelor's include, and do they meet my state's CPA subject requirements?
  • How are exams proctored, and what does proctoring cost?
  • Do instructors hold live office hours or tutoring sessions for intermediate accounting?
  • Are internships or recruiting events open to online students?
  • How many of my existing credits will apply to the accounting major, not just general electives?

For a broader look at the major itself, including forensic accounting and career paths, see our main accounting degree guide.

09Frequently asked questions

Are online accounting degrees respected?

Yes, when they come from an institutionally accredited school. Transcripts generally do not mark courses as online, and employers focus on accreditation, internships and skills. Some employers also value AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE business accreditation. Verify accreditation in the Department of Education's DAPIP database before enrolling.

Can I become a CPA with an online accounting degree?

Yes. State boards look at whether your school is accredited by a recognized accreditor and whether you completed the required accounting and business credits, not whether classes were online. Compare the program's course list with your state board's requirements, including whether your state uses the 150-hour rule, the newer bachelor's plus experience path, or both.

Is an online accounting master's degree worth it?

It can be if you need extra hours for the CPA, want specialized tax or audit skills, or are changing careers from a non-accounting bachelor's. In states that adopted the bachelor's plus two years of experience path, it is no longer the only way to licensure, so compare its cost with the value of starting work sooner.

How are online accounting exams proctored?

Most programs use remote proctoring through a webcam, either live or recorded and reviewed afterward, or require you to test at an approved testing center. You typically need a private room, a clear desk and a stable internet connection. Ask the school about proctoring fees and allowed calculators before your first exam.

Can I get financial aid for an online accounting degree?

Yes, at schools that are accredited, participate in Title IV and are authorized in your state. Undergraduates may qualify for Pell Grants up to $7,395 for 2026-27, and Direct Loans require at least half-time enrollment. Employers may also cover up to $5,250 a year tax-free through tuition assistance.
