Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) Degree
A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a professional doctorate for experienced managers who want to apply research methods to real business problems. It usually takes about three to five years, is often completed online or part-time, and ends with an applied dissertation.
01What is a Doctor of Business Administration degree?
A Doctor of Business Administration is the highest professional degree in business. Where an MBA teaches you to use existing frameworks, a DBA trains you to investigate problems systematically: frame a research question, review what is already known, collect and analyze data, and produce findings that a business can act on. The DBA degree meaning, in short, is "a research doctorate for practitioners."
Most DBA students are mid-career or senior professionals: executives, consultants, military officers, entrepreneurs and people who teach business part-time. They usually keep working throughout, which is why most programs are part-time and many are online. The DBA sits at the top of the business degree levels, alongside the PhD in business.
02DBA vs PhD in business
Both are doctorates and both require original research. They are built for different careers.
| Factor | DBA | PhD in business |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Apply research to practical business problems | Create new theory and academic knowledge |
| Typical students | Experienced managers who keep working | Full-time students preparing for research faculty careers |
| Format | Part-time, often online with residencies | Usually full-time on campus |
| Funding | Mostly self or employer funded | Often funded with a stipend in exchange for teaching or research work |
| Dissertation | Applied study, often in the student's own industry | Theory-driven research aimed at academic journals |
| Typical career | Executive leadership, consulting, teaching-focused faculty roles | Tenure-track research faculty |
If your goal is a research faculty position at a research university, the PhD is the conventional path. If you want to stay in industry and gain research skills, or teach at a teaching-focused institution, the DBA fits better. Hiring practices vary, so check job postings at the kind of institution you are targeting.
03DBA admissions requirements
Requirements differ, but most DBA degree programs ask for:
- A master's degree from an accredited school, often an MBA or a business-related master's. Some programs admit students with a master's in another field plus business prerequisites.
- Significant professional experience, frequently including management responsibility.
- A statement of purpose describing a business problem or research interest you want to investigate.
- Transcripts, recommendations, a resume and often an interview.
- Sometimes a writing sample. Tests such as the GMAT Focus Edition or GRE are required by some programs and waived by many.
A focused research interest helps your application. "Why do mid-size manufacturers abandon ERP implementations?" is stronger than "I am interested in technology."
04What you study: coursework and the applied dissertation
A DBA typically has three phases.
- Coursework. Advanced seminars in strategy, organizational theory, leadership, finance or marketing, plus research methods: research design, quantitative analysis, qualitative methods and the academic literature review.
- Comprehensive exam or qualifying paper. You show you can synthesize the literature and design sound research.
- Dissertation or doctoral study. You propose, conduct and defend an applied research project with a faculty committee, often studying a problem in your own organization or industry.
The dissertation is where many students slow down. Ask programs how they structure it: some embed dissertation milestones into courses from the first year, which tends to keep students on track. Others leave it until coursework ends.
05How a DBA degree online works
Many DBA programs are online or hybrid because their students work full-time. Common formats:
- Fully online: asynchronous courses plus scheduled video meetings with faculty and your dissertation chair.
- Online with residencies: online coursework plus short on-campus or virtual intensive sessions each year, used for research workshops and cohort building.
- Executive-style hybrid: periodic weekend or week-long sessions on campus with online work between them.
When comparing an online DBA degree, confirm institutional accreditation in the Department of Education's DAPIP database and look for business accreditation from AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE (ACBSP accredits programs up to the doctoral level). Ask about faculty availability for dissertation supervision, average time to completion and what happens if you need more time.
06How long a DBA takes
Most DBA programs are designed to take about three to five years part-time. A rough breakdown:
| Phase | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Coursework (credit totals vary by program) | About 2 years |
| Comprehensive exam and proposal | Several months |
| Data collection, writing and defense | About 1 to 2 years or more |
Some programs accept transfer credit for prior doctoral coursework. Delays usually come from the dissertation: access to data, committee scheduling and work demands. Programs often set a maximum time to finish, so ask how extensions work.
07Cost and funding for a DBA
DBA tuition varies widely by school and is usually charged per credit or as a program fee. Unlike many PhD programs, DBA programs rarely include stipends, so most students rely on savings, employer support or loans. Add residency travel and research costs to your estimate.
Federal loan rules changed on July 1, 2026. New graduate borrowers face a $20,500 annual Direct Loan limit and a $100,000 aggregate limit, and Grad PLUS ends for new borrowers. If you borrowed for earlier graduate degrees, check how close you are to the aggregate limit and confirm transition rules with the aid office. Employers can contribute up to $5,250 a year tax-free under Section 127, which over a multi-year DBA can add up meaningfully.
08Careers after a DBA and is it worth it
DBA graduates tend to follow three paths:
- Executive leadership, using evidence-based decision making in senior roles. BLS reports a 2025 median of $108,780 for top executives.
- Consulting, where a doctorate adds credibility. Management analysts earned a 2025 median of $101,860, with 10% projected growth from 2025 to 2035.
- Teaching, especially at teaching-focused colleges and in online programs, or academic leadership. Postsecondary education administrators earned a 2025 median of $104,590, and BLS lists a master's as typical entry education.
Across all fields, BLS reports 2025 median weekly earnings of $2,307 for doctoral degree holders, compared with $1,876 for master's holders, and an unemployment rate of 1.8%. A DBA is most worth it when you have a specific use for research skills or the title; it is hard to justify as a general salary boost given the time involved. If you have not yet earned a master's, start with online MBA programs or an executive MBA, and check accreditation using our AACSB accreditation guide.
09Frequently asked questions
What is a DBA degree?
A DBA, or Doctor of Business Administration, is a professional doctorate in business. It combines advanced business seminars with research methods training and ends with an applied dissertation that investigates a real business problem. It is aimed at experienced professionals who usually keep working while they study, and many programs are offered online or in hybrid formats.
What is the difference between a DBA and a PhD?
A PhD in business focuses on creating new theory and prepares students mainly for research faculty careers, usually through full-time, often funded study. A DBA focuses on applying research to practical problems and is built for working professionals, typically part-time and self or employer funded. Both are doctorates and both require an original dissertation.
Can you earn a DBA degree online?
Yes. Many DBA programs are fully online or online with short residencies. Check that the university has recognized institutional accreditation, that the business program holds AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE accreditation if that matters for your goals, and how dissertation supervision works online, including how often you meet your chair and committee.
How long does it take to get a DBA?
Most DBA programs are designed to take about three to five years of part-time study. Coursework typically takes around two years, followed by a comprehensive exam, a dissertation proposal and the research itself. The dissertation phase varies most, depending on data access, your work schedule and how the program structures milestones.
Is a DBA degree worth it?
It can be if you have a clear use for it, such as teaching business, consulting where credentials matter or leading evidence-based change at a senior level. BLS 2025 data show the highest median weekly earnings and lowest unemployment for doctoral degree holders. It is less compelling purely as a pay raise, given several years of part-time study and limited funding.
Can I call myself doctor with a DBA?
Yes. A DBA is an earned doctorate, so graduates can use the title Dr. or the letters DBA after their name. Usage in business settings varies by industry and company culture; many graduates use the title in academic, consulting and speaking contexts and list the credential on their resume and professional profiles.
