Business Degree Salary by Job and Degree Level
Business degree salary depends far more on the job you land than on the diploma itself. In May 2025, the BLS reported a median of $82,660 for business and financial occupations and $126,520 for management occupations, versus $50,980 across all jobs.
01Business degree salary at a glance
There is no single "business degree salary." The same bachelor's degree can lead to an event planning job with a 2025 median of $61,160 or a marketing management role with a median of $165,780, depending on specialty, experience and responsibility. The most useful way to think about pay is in three layers:
- Occupation group: the BLS reports a May 2025 median of $82,660 for business and financial occupations (analysts, accountants, specialists) and $126,520 for management occupations, compared with $50,980 for all occupations.
- Specific job: within each group, medians range widely, as the table below shows.
- Degree level: higher degrees correlate with higher earnings on average, but the effect is smaller than the effect of moving from a specialist role into a manager role.
All figures on this page are BLS medians: half of workers earn more, half earn less, and the median includes people at every career stage.
02Salary by education level
The BLS "Education pays" data compares median weekly earnings for full-time workers age 25 and older. It covers all fields, so treat it as the general premium for each credential.
| Highest degree | Median weekly earnings (2025) | Unemployment rate |
|---|---|---|
| Doctoral | $2,307 | 1.8% |
| Professional | $2,294 | 1.9% |
| Master's | $1,876 | 2.6% |
| Bachelor's | $1,578 | 2.8% |
| Associate | $1,135 | 3.0% |
| High school diploma | $966 | 4.3% |
The step from high school to a bachelor's is the largest single jump in the table. Each step after that still adds earnings, but by a smaller margin, which is why the return on a graduate degree depends so much on its cost and on what job it helps you reach.
03Business degree salary by job (BLS 2025 medians)
These are common destinations for business graduates. All list a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education except where noted.
| Occupation | Median pay (2025) | Outlook 2025-35 |
|---|---|---|
| Computer and information systems managers | $175,140 | 16% (much faster) |
| Financial managers | $166,570 | 10% (much faster) |
| Advertising, promotions and marketing managers | $165,780 | 6% (faster) |
| Human resources managers | $149,280 | 6% (faster) |
| Sales managers | $148,270 | 4% (as fast) |
| Medical and health services managers | $123,860 | 24% (much faster) |
| Financial analysts | $103,570 | 7% (much faster) |
| Project management specialists | $102,320 | 7% (much faster) |
| Management analysts | $101,860 | 10% (much faster) |
| Accountants and auditors | $83,680 | 5% (faster) |
| Logisticians | $82,320 | 18% (much faster) |
| Market research analysts | $78,760 | 7% (much faster) |
| Human resources specialists | $75,940 | 6% (faster) |
| Meeting, convention and event planners | $61,160 | 6% (faster) |
Notice the pattern: the manager roles at the top usually require years of experience in the analyst or specialist roles lower in the table. A graduate's first salary will typically look more like the lower rows. Deeper breakdowns are on the finance degree jobs, accounting degree jobs and marketing degree jobs pages.
04MBA degree salary: what the data can and cannot tell you
People often search for the "average salary for an MBA degree," but no BLS table reports pay specifically for MBA holders. The closest official figure is the median for all master's degree holders: $1,876 a week in 2025, against $1,578 for bachelor's holders. That figure blends MBAs with master's degrees in education, social work and many other fields.
What the data does show is where MBAs often lead. Senior roles such as financial managers ($166,570), marketing managers ($165,780), HR managers ($149,280) and top executives ($108,780 median, a group that includes many small-organization general managers) are common targets. The BLS lists a bachelor's as the typical entry education for these roles, which tells you the MBA is usually an accelerator, not a strict requirement.
A realistic way to think about MBA salary: it is mostly a function of what you did before and which role you move into after. Someone with several years of experience who uses an MBA to move into management captures most of the benefit. See online MBA programs for how working professionals fit one in.
05Salary with an associate degree in business
The BLS reports a median of $1,135 a week in 2025 for associate degree holders across all fields. In business, an associate degree can lead to supervisory, office management and bookkeeping roles. Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks, for example, earned a median of $50,670 in 2025, and the BLS lists "some college, no degree" as typical entry education, though that occupation is projected to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035. Several roles that list a high school diploma as typical entry, such as food service managers ($69,390) and lodging managers ($69,250), also reward associate-level business training. Many students treat the associate as a step toward a bachelor's, which opens the larger occupations in the table above. The associate degree in business administration guide covers that path.
06Doctoral business degree salary
The doctoral weekly median of $2,307 in 2025 is the highest in the BLS education table, but business doctorates lead to a narrow set of jobs: university faculty, research roles, senior consulting and executive positions. Postsecondary education administrators, a common path for doctorate holders in business education, earned a median of $104,590 in 2025. Economists, who typically need a master's, earned $124,720. A doctor of business administration is generally a career choice for people who want to teach or do applied research, not a fast route to a raise.
07What actually raises a business graduate's salary
- Choosing a quantitative concentration. Finance, analytics, accounting and information systems roles cluster in the upper half of the job table.
- Moving from specialist to manager. Compare HR specialists ($75,940) with HR managers ($149,280), or PR specialists ($74,750) with PR managers ($136,470). That jump is bigger than any degree premium.
- Licenses and certifications. The CPA license, for example, is a common requirement for senior accounting roles.
- Growth fields. Roles with strong projected growth, such as medical and health services managers (24%) and logisticians (18%), tend to have more openings and more room to negotiate.
- Location and industry. Pay varies widely by metro area and industry; check the BLS state and area data for your target market.
08A note on salary searches for other degrees
If you landed here comparing business salaries with nursing, computer science, social work or public health degrees, the same principle applies: compare the specific occupations each degree leads to, using the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, rather than relying on a single "degree salary" number. For business specifically, a broader list of options is on the jobs with a business degree page, and the cost-versus-payoff question is covered in is a business degree worth it.
09Frequently asked questions
What is the average salary with a business degree?
There is no single figure, because it depends on the job. The BLS reports a May 2025 median of $82,660 for business and financial occupations and $126,520 for management occupations, versus $50,980 for all occupations. New graduates usually start below these medians, which include workers at every experience level, and grow toward them over time.
What is the average salary for an MBA degree?
The BLS does not publish MBA-specific pay. Master's degree holders across all fields earned a median of $1,876 a week in 2025, compared with $1,578 for bachelor's holders. MBAs often target management roles such as financial managers ($166,570 median) or marketing managers ($165,780), but those roles depend heavily on prior experience.
Which business degree pays the most?
Degrees that lead to quantitative and management roles tend to pay the most. Among BLS 2025 medians, computer and information systems managers ($175,140), financial managers ($166,570) and marketing managers ($165,780) top the list. Entry roles from finance, accounting, information systems and analytics majors also sit above the business and financial group median.
How much more does a bachelor's degree pay than an associate degree?
BLS data for 2025 shows a median of $1,578 a week for bachelor's holders versus $1,135 for associate degree holders, all fields combined. That gap adds up to a large sum over a full working year and career. The bachelor's also had a lower unemployment rate, 2.8% versus 3.0%, and opens many business occupations that list a bachelor's as the entry requirement.
Can you get a high salary without a degree in business?
Some business occupations list a high school diploma as typical entry, including food service managers ($69,390 median in 2025), property managers ($69,990) and real estate agents ($57,400). Pay in these fields depends heavily on experience, licenses and sales results. Most of the highest-paid business roles list a bachelor's degree as typical entry.
