Undergraduate vs Graduate Degree: The Difference

An undergraduate degree is the first college degree you earn (an associate or bachelor's), while a graduate degree (a master's or doctorate) requires a bachelor's to get in. The two differ in admissions, depth, class format, cost structure and how financial aid works.

01Undergraduate vs graduate degree in one sentence

The undergraduate vs graduate degree distinction is about sequence: undergraduate degrees come first and need only a high school diploma or equivalent to start, while graduate degrees come after you already hold a bachelor's degree. Everything else (depth of study, class size, admissions tests, aid rules) follows from that basic order.

In US higher education the ladder looks like this: associate degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctoral degree. Certificates can sit at either level. The first two rungs are undergraduate; the last two are graduate. Our overview of business degree levels explains each rung specifically for business students.

02What is an undergraduate degree?

An undergraduate degree is any degree earned before a bachelor's is completed, including the bachelor's itself. There are two kinds:

  • Associate degree: typically about 60 semester credits, about two years full-time. Common titles are AA, AS and AAS.
  • Bachelor's degree: typically about 120 semester credits, about four years full-time. Common titles are BA, BS and BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration).

An undergraduate degree program blends breadth and focus. Roughly the first half is general education (writing, math, sciences, humanities), and the second half concentrates on your major. A business undergraduate typically studies financial and managerial accounting, micro and macroeconomics, business statistics, marketing principles, management, business law, finance and a capstone in strategy.

If you are counting credits, our guide on how many credits for a bachelor's degree breaks the 120 down by category.

03What is a 4-year degree called?

A 4-year degree is called a bachelor's degree. The formal term is baccalaureate degree, which is why you will see phrases like "baccalaureate programs" or "postbaccalaureate certificates" in college catalogs. Common versions include:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA): more liberal arts requirements, often a foreign language.
  • Bachelor of Science (BS): more math, science or technical requirements.
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA): a professional business degree with a larger business core.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS): often designed for students transferring in with applied associate degrees.

"Four years" is a full-time estimate. Many working adults take five or six years part-time, and transfer students can finish in two. The degree itself is defined by credits, not years.

04What is a graduate degree?

A graduate degree is advanced study that requires a completed bachelor's degree for admission. There are two main levels:

  • Master's degree: typically about 30 to 60 credits, often one to two years full-time. In business, examples include the MBA, Master of Accountancy, MS in Finance and the master's in management.
  • Doctoral degree: a PhD focused on research, or a professional doctorate such as the Doctor of Business Administration focused on applied research. These usually take several years beyond the master's.

Graduate courses assume you already have the basics. Instead of survey courses, you get case discussions, applied projects, research methods and electives in a narrow area. Programs are smaller, and classmates often have years of work experience, which shapes class discussion as much as the professor does.

The aid row matters. The Pell Grant, with a maximum of $7,395 for 2026-27, is generally limited to undergraduates who do not yet have a bachelor's degree. Graduate students rely more on federal loans, employer assistance and assistantships, and federal graduate borrowing rules change for new borrowers starting July 1, 2026. Our financial aid for online college guide covers both sides.

06What is a post degree diploma?

A post degree diploma (also called a postgraduate diploma or post-degree diploma) is a program you take after finishing a degree, usually a bachelor's. The term is common in Canada, India, the UK and Australia, where post degree diplomas are often one- or two-year practical programs in fields like business management, accounting or supply chain.

In the United States the closest equivalents are:

  • Postbaccalaureate certificate: undergraduate-level coursework for people who already hold a bachelor's, often used to switch fields or meet prerequisites (for example, accounting courses toward CPA eligibility).
  • Graduate certificate: a short set of graduate-level courses, often four to six, in a focused area. Credits sometimes count toward a later master's.

The post degree diploma meaning therefore depends on where the program is offered. If you hold one from abroad and want to use it in the US, a credential evaluation service can tell employers or schools how it compares. 07How online study differs at each level

Online formats look different on each side of the undergraduate vs graduate line, and knowing the difference helps you pick the right program.

Undergraduate online programs

Online bachelor's and associate programs often run on 7- or 8-week terms with several start dates a year and generous transfer policies, because many students are adults finishing a degree they started earlier. Expect discussion boards, weekly quizzes and written assignments, plus proctored exams in some math or accounting courses. Self-paced and competency-based formats are most common at this level.

Graduate online programs

Online master's programs, including online MBAs, more often use cohorts that move through courses together, live evening sessions for case discussion, and team projects with classmates in other time zones. Some require a short in-person residency. Admissions look at your bachelor's GPA, work experience, essays and sometimes a GMAT or GRE score, though many programs offer test waivers for experienced applicants.

At both levels, check that the school holds institutional accreditation from a recognized accreditor, and for business programs consider whether the business school also holds programmatic accreditation from AACSB, ACBSP or IACBE.

08Does a graduate degree pay off over an undergraduate degree?

On average, each step up the ladder is associated with higher earnings and lower unemployment. The BLS reports these 2025 medians for full-time workers age 25 and older:

Highest educationMedian weekly earnings (2025)Unemployment rate (2025)
Associate degree$1,1353.0%
Bachelor's degree$1,5782.8%
Master's degree$1,8762.6%
Doctoral degree$2,3071.8%

These are averages across all fields and do not prove that a degree causes higher pay for any individual. In business, many well-paid roles list a bachelor's as the typical entry-level education, so the graduate decision is usually about a specific goal: moving into management, changing fields, or meeting a credential requirement. Weigh the cost and time against that goal rather than the averages alone.

09Frequently asked questions

What is an undergraduate degree program?

An undergraduate degree program leads to an associate or bachelor's degree. It combines general education courses such as writing, math and science with a major field of study. You only need a high school diploma or equivalent to enroll. A bachelor's typically requires about 120 semester credits and an associate about 60.

Is a bachelor's degree undergraduate or graduate?

A bachelor's degree is an undergraduate degree. It is the highest undergraduate credential and the usual requirement for entering graduate school. Once you hold a bachelor's, any further degree you pursue, such as a master's or doctorate, is a graduate degree, and certificates you take afterward are called postbaccalaureate or graduate certificates.

What is a 4 year degree called?

A 4-year degree is called a bachelor's degree, formally a baccalaureate degree. Common types include the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Business Administration. Four years assumes full-time study of about 120 semester credits; part-time students often take longer and transfer students can finish sooner.

What is the difference between graduate and undergraduate courses?

Undergraduate courses introduce a subject and assume little prior knowledge, while graduate courses build on a completed bachelor's and go deeper, often with case analysis, research or applied projects. Graduate classes are usually smaller, expect more independent work and draw on classmates' professional experience. Graduate programs also skip general education requirements.

Is a post degree diploma the same as a master's degree?

No. A post degree diploma is a shorter, usually practical program taken after a bachelor's, and the term is mostly used outside the US. A master's is a full graduate degree with more credits and depth. In the US, the closest equivalents to a post degree diploma are postbaccalaureate and graduate certificates.
